Only one week later and yet I had another opportunity to volunteer in a classroom. I am so grateful for the teachers that are taking time out of their day to let me in their classroom, allowing me to get the full concept on what it is like to be an educator. Today, the grade 2/3 class was focusing on fractions. Ms. Williams, the teacher I was shadowing, made visuals out of paper to show what the fractions are. Like the example picture below, there were strips of paper allowing the students to visually see how two 1/2's made up 1 whole.
Through this experience, I learned how important visuals are
to elementary school students! As a teacher, focusing on intertwining all learning styles into one lesson. You cannot simply give them a worksheet on fractions, but you have to get models so the children can physically grasp the concept and understand what it means, rather than staring at a piece of paper.
I went into the classroom around ten o'clock which was their recess time. When it was time to eat their snack, this amazing teacher wasted no time and began to read a book they have been reading for a week or two. The children were able to stay quiet because they were so excited and thrilled about this book. I was amazed because I discovered that if the teacher is passionate, so are the children. These few hours in the classroom is something I will hold with me forever, when I am doing my practicum in school, or when I have a classroom of my own!
