What Makes a Good Teacher?

If my overall career goal is to become a teacher, I should defiantly know what makes a good teacher and how to achieve that goal of mine. To ultimately find out what key attributes a great teacher has, I completed research trying to find the best websites that refer to what a good educator should be like. Like expected, the usual "a good teacher is kind and respectful" came up more than several websites. However, multiple articles stated this because it is beyond true. Overall a good person should be kind and respectful; therefore a teacher should be like that too. When working as an elementary school, you are preparing the next generation for the future years to come. Setting an influential example by being generous and thoughtful is crucial for a children's childhood. Being brought up with never ending kindness helps the student feel loved and cared for.

One trait that stuck out to me the most was that a teacher is demanding without being mean. As I still am a student in school, I cannot elaborate enough on the fact that some educators can be rude and demanding. A teacher should have a balance of discipline and patience. If a student or the class is disobeying, simply give them a warning, get their attention and be specific with what you want from them. Don't yell, point, or consistently call one kid out from the class. Be kind even when being demanding. The last critical key that makes a teacher great is that they enjoy what they do. They would not want to be anywhere else. They love teaching, they love their students, and enjoy what they teach. Many people go to their jobs everyday disliking it. This not only harms yourself, but harms the others you are working with. People tend to mold to the group they are around. Even when its hard, smile! This will leave a positive influence on your students. Change your mood around, even if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. My favourite teachers are the ones who clearly have a passion for teaching and enjoy being with their students every day. If you take anything from this post, take away that you have the oppurtunity to positivley influence people. So be the change and be kind, hopeful and giving.
